DIABETES AND BONE MINERAL DENSITY – BMD –

DIABETES AND BONE MINERAL DENSITY – BMD –

In type 1 diabetes, for example, women are 5-8% lower in density than other non-diabetic women.
This loss of bone density may be a cause of development of osteoporosis that can occur during perimenopause or in menopause – American study published in the journal « Diabetes Care » -.

      SUMMARY
      I – EPIDEMIOLOGICAL RECALL
II – PRESENTATION OF THE FACTS
III – HOW DO DIABETES INFLUENCE BONE MINERAL DENSITY?

      I – EPIDEMIOLOGICAL RECALL
      Before age 55, those are the men most vulnerable to diabetes;
This trend is reversed from age 55 or those are the most affected women.
In total, an estimated 143 million women worldwide have diabetes, a figure that could rise to 222 million in 2030.

II – PRESENTATION OF THE FACTS
We know that the specificities of diabetes are identical to both sexes, but it is proven that women have more special conditions for diabetes disease and especially for its control.
he reasons for this difference are found in the hormonal physiology of women.
We also know that the menstrual cycle, pregnancy for example, vary the physiological norms – either increase or decrease – and therefore, be partly responsible for this tendency to not be able to control his diabetes.
Another fact is that women are more likely to suffer from cardiovascular complications that are closely related to diabetes.
The mastery of all complications related to diabetes can only be done with good control of his disease. In our writing, we reviewed the main specificities, which can accentuate diabetes – and of course its complications – in women.

III – HOW DO DIABETES INFLUENCE BONE MINERAL DENSITY?
In type 1 diabetes, for example, women are 5-8% lower in density than other non-diabetic women.
This loss of bone density may be a cause of development of osteoporosis that can occur during perimenopause or in menopause – American study published in the journal « Diabetes Care » -.

      Statement of Facts –
The skeleton, therefore the bone, plays an essential, if not essential role in the regulation of blood glucose and may even be the trigger of diabetes in some people.
Bone is a tissue and as tissue, it is in constant renewal – manufacture \ phase of formation \ – destruction \ phase of resorption –
These renewal phases are known as – turn over – or bone remodeling phase
It turns out that « the turnover – contributes to the maintenance of the normal levels of glucose in the blood or blood sugar.
It has been shown that there is a correlation between bone and insulin and this correlation is an essential link in explaining the relationship between osteoporosis and diabetes.
The bone would therefore be a true endocrino-metabolic organ.

The bone ! Endocrine gland ?
Actually the bone produces two hormones
      osteocalcin –
BP2 – a new hormone that has just been discovered –

      1 – Osteocalcin
Osteocalcin is a protein hormone specific to bone tissue.
She plays a role on –
      The pancreas to regulate insulin
Fats to regulate adiponectin – insulin sensitivity –
      Leydig cells to regulate testosterone
      2 – BP2
It acts on energy metabolism and brain level on satiety

      Important –
Osteocalcin is directly dependent on vitamin K
An osteocalcin deficiency can be a trigger for diabetes.

      Note
It also remains true that some antidiabetic drugs are associated with the onset of osteoporosis, as it is also true, that some medications prescribed in the treatment of osteoporosis, may interfere with the blood sugar level
Unfortunately, it has also been reported that certain metabolites – amino acids, nucleic acids … – calcium and vitamin K, can also interfere in the mechanisms related to diabetes.

      Argumentation
It turns out that osteoporosis is directly involved in diabetes and could be a factor in the development of the disease.
From this observation we can argue that the bone as an endocrine gland, may play a role in the treatment of diabetes and more particularly type 2 diabetes.
Work in this direction is already under way
